Gabriel Garcia Marques

One writer who caught my eye was Gabriel Garcia Marques from Columbia. He was a journalist and short-story writer who soon became one of the most famous writers in Latin-America. He was born in 1927 and unfortunately died in 2014. Marques originally planned to study law at Jesuit college, but was sent to Rome in 1954 for an assignment regarding his journaling career. In 1982, Marques won the Nobel prize in Literature mainly because of his use of magical realism in the story “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” (I will discuss this in a post later on). I find it fascinating that he began as a journalist, and then explored other topics (like short-stories, long novels, etc) within his interest. He made novels and short-stories that attracted all ages as well, including children.  His books are translated into many languages, which made me wonder how the themes and messages in his books change. I am a native English speaker, and am studying Spanish in school and at home. In my next post, I will read one of his short-stories titled “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” in both English and Spanish and see how they compare.
